Live online seats will be available at this link!

Asheville artist Deb Karash is coming back to The Makery, and this time she's bringing a fun workshop experience that is unlike anything she's offered with us before.

Over three days, Deb will share her approach to designing and creating unique dimensional jewelry. We'll use layers to build pieces with volume and interest and learn how to incorporate found objects, beads, and non-traditional materials. She'll share some of her favorite soldering tips as well as how to make the most of cold connections. And she'll show us how texture and patina can be used to create additional depth and interest for maximum visual impact.

This is a workshop that goes well beyond the basics - prior successful soldering experience is useful, but otherwise all levels are welcome. And as an added bonus, the entire class will be recorded and you'll get 30 days access to the same videos our online participants will get... at no additional cost!

Bring found objects, scrap fabric, or anything else you'd like to incorporate, plus eye magnification (if you need it) and a notebook. Otherwise, absolutely everything necessary to complete the project is provided in this workshop – all tools, materials, and equipment!

A special word about materials fees in 2026:

The cost of silver is extremely volatile and higher than we have ever seen it. Accordingly, materials fees will not be posted until two to three weeks before the workshop date, based on the then-spot price of silver. Where possible, we will make use of alternative metals to keep costs down.

Information about taking workshops with us
can be found at this link.

Workshop fee (non-taxable): $585

Materials fee (taxable): TBD
(taxable and payable in the workshop)

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
July 10 - 12, 2026
9:30 am to 5:00 pm daily

Note: We recommend bringing your own eye magnification to help you see as clearly as possible while working. Because these needs are so personal, it's impossible for us to have the right thing on hand for every student. Need help with this? Call the studio or send us an email!

About Deb Karash

Deb Karash brings color to metal using a technique more often used on paper. She creates beautiful jewelry by drawing on metal with Prismacolor pencils. A fascination with color and texture informs her work, both geometric and botanical, with the occasional branching off into whimsical robots and rockets. While her subject matter may change, her unusual technique remains consistent. It is her bold use of color and her application technique that drives students around the world to seek her out as a teacher.

Why does Deb choose to draw on metal? “Jewelry is about intimacy and connection. It has a history of marking special moments in time and it is one of the rare art forms that we carry out in the world with us. We use it to tell the outside world something about ourselves.” Through teaching she delights in sharing her skills and bringing students together to learn and to share their own skills and stories. For her, teaching is more than just imparting information. “There is a joy in giving a student that ‘aha’ moment when something really changes for them,” she says, “I love guiding their skills to the next level.”

“Art is not a thing, it is a way.” Elbert Hubbard
