We're welcoming Suzanne Williams back to the studio for another round of unconventional clasps. This four-day hands-on workshop will introduce us to three new interactive clasp styles, each with endless design possibilities.

  • The Tab Lock Clasp. This fancy, modified toggle-type clasp features two interlocking parts. The receiving portion is characterized by a framed back panel and an opening through which a locking insert is threaded. Suzanne will show us two versions, one flat and one more dimensional.
  • Nesting Shapes Puzzle Clasp. This two-part interlocking clasp features two framed pieces embellished with components placed so they fit snugly together, one inside the other.
  • Hinged Fold-over Clasp. This two-part clasp is constructed of a hollow box exterior with a hinged lid that opens to receive a tightly-fitting insert. The clasp is secured by closing the lid of the box.

These clasp mechanisms can stand alone in basic form, or be modified and incorporated in unique and unusual ways, in innumerable variations, into necklace and bracelet closures. They can also be integrated into the main design or focal piece of a piece of jewelry. These clasp mechanisms are intriguing, functional, fun, and invite being taken apart and put back together like a puzzle.

PLEASE NOTE: The images in this workshop listing are examples of way these clasp mechanisms can be used and embellished. We will not be making these exact pieces; our focus will be on fabricating the functional mechanisms these pieces represent.

This is an intermediate to advanced skills class, and students should have solid foundational fabrication skills including soldering, sawing, filing, and finishing. The entire workshop will be recorded in close-up high definition video, and all students receive 30 days access to the recordings on our virtual learning platform at no additional cost!

About Suzanne Williams

Suzanne is a Colorado resident. She graduated from Colorado State University in 1980 with a degree in printmaking and later worked as a graphic artist, illustrator, fine artist, and technician in art/bronze casting foundries before bringing the many facets of her art background together to begin her jewelry-making career in 1990. She has shown her work in galleries, art festivals and shows. Suzanne is always working on developing and applying new techniques and approaches to creating her signature 3-dimensional jewelry such as designing and fabricating unconventional clasps and closures for her work. Hand fabricated clasps and closures have always been an integral part of her designs, but in the past few years she has intensified her exploration and development of new and interesting ways of joining jewelry elements together. She has also more recently been teaching workshops. That includes further exploring and sharing novel and unconventional approaches to the design, functionality and creation of clasps and closure methods.
