ABOUT THE STUDIO

The Makery is located in the historic Old Village of Bulverde, in a century-old building that used to be the community’s German 9-pin bowling alley. We love this light-filled space, and although the original old wood floors are wonky and uneven and require that we shim and level every piece of furniture and equipment, their warmth and character remind us of the importance of this space as a community gathering place. We love imagining the families who came here to play, to visit, to take refreshment in the attached tearoom (now Verde Bistro), and to get competitive: 9-pin bowling is something the German immigrants in this part of Texas took seriously and – in some places – still do.

This light-filled space houses the working studios of owner-artists Nick and Francesca Watson, and a welcoming teaching area for workshops by Francesca and a select roster of guest instructors. Rather than try to compete with big box art stores and resellers, we concentrate on developing and maintaining affiliate relationships with a large network of US-based vendors and manufacturers who provide us with the tools and equipment we love and actually use ourselves. That means we can serve as a resource for you, steering you towards reputable companies who offer top-notch customer service in addition to the products you’re looking for.

VISITING FROM OUT OF TOWN

If you’re coming from out of town to attend one of our workshops, we recommend flying into San Antonio International Airport. If you can get a killer deal on airfare into Austin, you should consider it – but remember that we are about an hour and 15 minutes by car, depending on traffic. You’ll need a rental car to get to and from the studio each day, since there is no public transit out here in the country!

We highly recommend seeing if you can grab one of the luxurious rooms at Eagles Landing Lodge, right across the street from the studio. It’s a new lodging option right in the heart of our little Village with over-the-top accommodations at very reasonable prices. It’s easy walking distance to the studio and our several excellent food options, and you won’t be disappointed by the welcoming atmosphere. We also have a Hampton Inn about 10 minutes north of the studio, which is the closest commercial hotel option. There are lodging options at Tejas Rodeo, which is not far from the studio; they have several cottages on the property, which is a working horse and cattle ranch that features an on-site steakhouse and live rodeos on Saturday nights from March to November. If none of these can accommodate you, the hotels south of us on the map below will have you driving against rush hour traffic on your way to and from our studio, and none will be more than 15 minutes drive time. The Makery is located at the blue star; click one of the yellow bed icons to see which hotel is closest and/or offering the best deal at the moment.
