Join us for a three day class with master enamelist Jan Harrell, jam packed with exciting new advances in mark-making for enamels – and even better, some of the skills we’ll learn can be used in other disciplines including fused glass, mixed media, art journaling, and more! We’ll start with designing and creating two letter size screens, using either many small designs or a single large pattern to fill the entire page. Then we’ll use those screens to “print” our designs on enameled copper, creating imagery that is unique and highly customizable. This inexpensive and versatile project augments traditional enameling techniques and allows us to wrap images along dimensional forms, create elaborate stencils, incorporate fonts and text, and much more.
Strong contrasting black and white images work best with this process, but never fear: Jan is bringing tried and true images for us to use so we can concentrate on learning the process, plus she’ll give us a thorough breakdown of all the steps to edit and create our own images for screen creation at home. This process is appropriate for small scale jewelry work as well as larger panels and sculptural scale objects. We’ll learn how to create, expose, and use our own screens, and how to work with small components and larger panels. We’ll screen our designs onto both flat and dimensional pieces, and experiment with using our screens to create decals and layered screened elements for visual dimension. At the end of three days, we’ll have multiple enameled components for use in jewelry-scale projects, at least two full-size reusable screens, and a completed enameled wall panel.
Jan brings a wealth of enamel information that has been refined from her 25 years of teaching enameling at the Glassell School of Art in Houston, Texas. This workshop is perfect for all levels of makers: beginners and advanced makers alike will learn new skills for their enameling toolkit, and absolutely everything required to participate is included – just come have fun!
