WOW! It’s our FIFTH annual metals retreat!
2018 marks our FIFTH metals retreat in the Texas Hill Country and we are excited to be welcoming rockstar artist Robert Lopez for a four day intensive. You won’t want to miss out on the TWO stunning projects he’s created just for us!
WE HAVE ONE SPOT OPEN FOR THIS RETREAT!
Robert has created two gorgeous projects for us, beginning with a stunning wood-based pendant. We’ll use gorgeous hardwoods to create our foundation, filing, sanding and polishing the wood to a shiny luster, reveling in the beauty of this sometimes unappreciated material for jewelry. Then we’ll fuse Argentium Silver to construct interesting embellishments, and Robert will show us his secrets for inlaying silver discs so they lay flush and seamlessly in the wood. We will also go in depth to explore soldering, annealing, polishing, riveting and shaping the wood and metal.
Then we’ll really push ourselves on a large and unique neck piece constructed of Argentium Silver and copper. Robert will cover the basics of sweat soldering and pick soldering, which is an essential and very versatile skill for your jewelry-making toolbox. But he will also walk us through fabricating a bezel setting and a unique hinge and clasp, plus how to make water casts and twist jump rings, tips for getting the most out of polishing, and roll printing. We’ll finish off our custom piece by setting a stone from Robert’s collection.
As always, your retreat fee includes absolutely everything you’ll need to complete the project: all materials, all equipment, all tools. You just need to pack your bags and come ready to play!
Once again, we’re returning to the amazing Sage Hill Inn in Kyle, Texas for a week of creative immersion, gorgeous views, and amazing food. Your lodging fee includes not only luxurious accommodations in one of the country’s top boutique hotels, but also three gourmet meals each day. We’ll be setting up a full metals and lapidary studio in the Ranch House, which is flooded with natural light and has beautiful views. (We may even get a visit from a friendly neighborhood peacock!) In the evenings you can enjoy some down time around the fire pit, indulge in a massage at the Inn’s exquisite on-site spa, or explore the Inn’s extensive and varied grounds.
PLEASE NOTE: If you have special dietary requests, you’re invited to call the Inn and speak directly with Chef Kristen Abram to make arrangements for your stay.
One of the most wonderful things about this retreat are the relationships we build year after year. In addition to guest instructor Robert Lopez, regular hosts Francesca Watson and Melissa Muir will be joined by this year by metalsmith Gwen Youngblood. They’ll all be standing by to coach and advise you as you build your beautiful project, making this a unique opportunity to work with some of the top metals instructors in the country. And because we limit retreat attendance to just 12 participants, you’re guaranteed lots of personal one-on-one attention.

ABOUT ROBERT LOPEZ
Robert Lopez is a self-taught metalsmith who lives and works in Southern California. He was drawn to fabricating jewelry by the challenges and physical process of conforming metal and stone to his vision. He began slowly teaching himself to do the work, accumulating an ever-growing collection of tools and knowledge anywhere he could. Mostly, though, he learned by endlessly experimenting with any and all materials at hand, making use of non-traditional metals, found objects, and unusual stones. His raw and organic designs are fabricated with skill and intention, but he allows them to grow without constraints or preconceived notions. His pieces are completely one-of-a-kind and made with his own hands; he frequently rolls his own metal sheet from ingots he pours himself and usually grinds and polishes his own stones. Most of his pieces are designed with lots of texture and layering, giving his pieces a very distinctive and distressed look. Robert’s new website is at www.robertlopezdesigns.com, and you can find his most current work on Instagram by following @robertlopezdesigns.
