We are thrilled to be welcoming the incomparable Rodi Frunze to our studio for four days unlike anything we’ve ever offered before! Join us for an in-depth exploration of the creative techniques Rodi uses in her extraordinary and award-winning metal clay designs.
Under Rodi’s expert guidance, we’ll design and create our own detailed and unique pendant based on her original. Each element will allow us to discover and incorporate new techniques for hand-forming and hand-carving, including best practices for working with and combining unfired elements, maintaining fine detail, firing complex designs, and creating visual flow. We’ll build unique ornamentation for both the front and back of our pieces, including a majestic honey bee element, and learn how to optimize shrinkage within our designs. We’ll also learn the particular design considerations necessary for soldering a bezel to metal clay, so we can incorporate a stunning Mango Chalcedony gemstone. We’ll end by sanding, polishing and patinating our pieces based on our preferred finish.
This in-depth four day program is designed to give us hands-on experience in a wide range of techniques for working with fine silver metal clay. We’re including all tools, equipment and materials necessary to complete the project, so all you have to do is show up and have fun! And although this project will incorporate advanced metal clay techniques, previous metal clay experience is not required; motivated beginners are welcome!

ABOUT RODI FRUNZE
Rodica (Rodi) Frunze is a full-time metal clay artist with a contagious passion for exploring what can be accomplished with the medium. Born in the small eastern European country of Moldova, Rodi completed her studies in medicine and became a Doctor of Psychiatry. Along with her loving partner / husband and her young son, she currently resides in Nanaimo located on Vancouver Island, Canada. Her observation of the human experience and the relationship with the environment permeates and inspires her artistry.
In order to accomplish her designs, Rodi developed her own techniques based on traditional metalsmithing that require the most basic of tools. These techniques working with metal clay combined with traditional jewelry making techniques gained her recognition and accolades in the form of taking both 1st & 2nd place Bead Dreams – metalwork category 2016, nominated winner of 2015 Metal Clay Europe interpretive design competition, finalist in the Bead Dreams – metalwork 2017. She was also nominated winner in the coveted 2016 Saul Bell Award (metal clay category).
